What is a Book Group?

If you are in a book group, you are carrying on a grand tradition!

Book groups and book clubs. Reading groups and reading circles. Whatever we choose to call them, we are carrying on a centuries-old tradition.

Reading groups have moved from the parlors and salons of the 1800's to the living rooms and kitchens of today. It’s obvious that these groups meet some vital needs: a sense of community, intellectual stimulation, camaraderie, intimacy, good conversation, a way to spend time with like-minded people and a "group of one's own." And they help us choose good books to read.

Book Clubs create best-sellers

If it weren’t for book groups, reading groups, reading circles and book clubs, important books such as Khaled Hosseini’s "The Kite Runner" and Sara Gruen’s “Water for Elephants” may never have reached a mainstream audience. Publishers are taking note, recognizing the power of book groups and their intelligent, discriminating members as never before.

A book group offers you time and space to get together with other avid readers and discuss your favorite books and authors. But lively discussions about character and plot, sense of place, or issues of the day, are not the only benefits that come from being in a book group. Friendship and food, wit and wisdom, and equal portions of smart conversation and heated debate, all may occur during this special time that's set aside just for you. These gatherings are fueled by anything from chocolate and wine to tea and brownies—and sometimes a complete dinner!.
